January 30, 2018: Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017: Changes and Strategies for Employers
January 30 @ 7:30 am - 9:00 am
Join Sean Moorfield of MNP (authors of the “Steering Through Change” employers’ handbook on how to navigate Bill 148, released in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce), and Wilson Vukelich LLP Labour & Employment Lawyer, Christine Ashton. They will review the key changes affecting your business in 2018 and share best practice employer strategies. Bring your questions for the Q and A!
As of January 1 & April 1 2018, when Bill 148 comes into force, it will substantially alter the legal landscape for employers in many ways with significant reforms to both the Employment Standards Act and the Labour Relations Act. For example, Bill 148 will:
Increase employers’ workforce costs, with increases to the minimum wage, additional vacation pay obligations, part-time employee pay matching obligations, 2 paid sick days and minimum shift pay when there is a short-notice cancellation.
Expose employers to prosecutions and penalties where they have mislabeled employees as contractors.
Greatly increase the unions’ ability to organize, certify new bargaining units and extend current bargaining units.
